Luther S. Allison is an acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, pianist, drummer, composer, and educator recognized as one of the leading voices in contemporary jazz. A Charlotte, North Carolina native, his blues-based, gospel-inspired style is deeply rooted in the traditions of bebop and soul.

After earning degrees in jazz studies from the University of Tennessee and Michigan State University, Allison launched an international touring career performing with artists including Jazzmeia Horn, Samara Joy, Helen Sung, Rodney Whitaker, Etienne Charles, The Baylor Project, and Ulysses Owens Jr.

His debut album, I Owe It All To You (Posi-Tone Records), earned 4.5 stars from DownBeat, which praised him as “a straight-ahead pianist who seems to have no weak points in his arsenal.” He also appears on numerous recordings, including the GRAMMY Award-winning single “Tight” with Samara Joy.

Allison has performed at premier venues including the Village Vanguard, Dizzy’s Club, Birdland, the Kennedy Center, and Blue Note Milano, as well as major festivals such as Newport, Monterey, North Sea, Umbria, Marciac, and Jazz à Vienne.

Beyond performing, Allison is an accomplished educator, curator, and composer. He has served on the faculty of The Calhoun School, Brevard Jazz Institute, and Stanford Jazz Workshop, and has curated programs for the National Jazz Museum in Harlem and the Louis Armstrong House Museum. His recent commissions include an original work for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra by invitation of Wynton Marsalis, as well as music directing and arranging Duke Ellington’s Sacred Works for Jazz at Lincoln Center. Allison also appears as an actor and musician in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s upcoming film The Bride.
